Do you like Shoji Meguro? His early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne came out in 2003, I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole game has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He’s been compared to Kenichi Tsuchiya, but I think Shoji has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
In 2004, Meguro released this, DDS: Avatar Tuner Integral, his most accomplished album. I think his undisputed masterpiece is “Battle For Survival”, a song so catchy, most people probably don’t listen to the melody. But they should, because it’s not just about battling for survival, and the importance of friends, it’s also a personal statement about the Embryon itself.
